Toronto Winter Storm: Slippery Conditions, Heavy Snow And Freezing Rain

As the mercury dropped and rain began to thicken in the Toronto area early Sunday morning, the City of Toronto warned drivers to expect slippery conditions on the roads and warned that the extreme cold may be a factor.

Drivers should exercise extreme caution if they need to venture out, especially at dawn Sunday, before 1 p.m. and again at midnight.

According to the City of Toronto website, major arteries that run through the downtown core could be closed due to ice, slippery conditions and frozen plow blades.

Of particular concern are the highways running through York University and the Trillium Science Centre and the power lines across the K-Rock Centre.

The storm is forecast to continue into the evening, when the temperature is expected to drop to a little below zero. That may pose problems for Monday morning commuters.

Tim Hudak, the premier of Ontario, acknowledged that the cold and ice in the Toronto area is concerning but said the province has been preparing for these types of storms “for a long time.” He added that officials will monitor conditions throughout the afternoon.
