The US tourism industry is reporting that people are returning to the country amid an ongoing dispute with its European trade partners.

On 1 April, the EU banned the import of US pork, beef and washing machines for three years.

Now France, Norway and the Netherlands say they are getting more of the visitors it lost because of the ban.

“Since then the market has become an even bigger market for us,” said Jet Capital Sales and Marketing Director Jean-Francois Roche.

He said American visitors spent 2.5bn Euros (£2.15bn; $2.78bn) in the Netherlands this year, compared with 1.8bn in 2017.

A general impact survey by UK tour operator Thomas Cook was slightly less optimistic about the situation in the US. It said that more than a third of its customers in the US had flown to make their holiday plans in April.

But it added that it could not say for sure if the ban had affected that number, with the survey carrying a margin of error of 3%.

European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said: “We are not aware of any changes in the number of US visitors being taken back by Americans.

“We expect the trade dispute with the US to be settled as soon as possible.”

He added that the EU had taken steps to try to protect its industry during the dispute.

The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service is also assessing the economic impact of the ban.

“It is difficult to determine any link between the effects of the tit-for-tat trade dispute and other general economic trends,” a spokesperson said.

“However, we are not unaware of anecdotal reports suggesting that if travellers previously in the US can’t visit we are seeing a drop in domestic tourist expenditure and that consumers are looking to Britain instead.”
