Former high school student charged with conspiring to commit school shooting in Michigan

April Crumbley’s son Ethan was due to graduate from Detroit’s Harper Woods High School on Friday. But now, he’s one of the six teenagers indicted on federal charges for conspiring to shoot up the school. The 19-year-old surrendered to police after the shooting on Wednesday afternoon. He is the first person charged in the case to be taken into custody, and the first student to be charged with possession of firearms in school, The Detroit News reports.

The indictment — issued by a grand jury in Detroit — alleges that in November, the students, who allegedly planned to kill at least 20 people, drew up a detailed spreadsheet, filled with specific “plans to commit a shooting at the school.” The document included a diagram of the school gym, a list of places to hide and target, and a list of weapons to be used, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Students who took part in the alleged conspiracy were charged with two counts of conspiring to commit the crime of interstate transportation of a firearm; six counts of attempting to commit the crime of interstate transportation of a firearm; four counts of unlawfully attempting to possess a firearm; and one count of attempting to commit the crime of interstate transportation of a firearm.

Witnesses claim that the teens shot at random at the school when they heard the metal detectors go off. Students evacuated the school as police arrived and rescued students that were still inside. No one was seriously injured.

Survivors who were hospitalized told investigators that one student, identified as Tadral Green, was seen jumping over the campus fence to run back into the school. It is unclear what might have led to Green’s running back inside.
